Everything old is new again!
Sometimes we just need to get back in touch with our 10-year-old selves. Forego the self-imposed and even more so, society imposed rules of adulthood and go back to what did it for our young hearts. After spending almost half of my birth month of July 2021 in Brooklyn, NY, mostly in the neighborhood of Crown Heights, specifically, I gained a fresh appreciation for some of the sights and sounds that were part of my everyday, 10-year-old experience. I spent leisurely mornings and evenings walking on the historic, Eastern Parkway, not feeling a moment's guilt that I wasn't jogging while others were. I walked into the library that gave me my first library card on Eastern Pkwy and Troy Ave and appreciated the technology that never existed when I was a reader there, but which maintains a vital place next to good old, hold in your hand, smell the pages, books with engaging covers. I talked with old friends on the steps of the church I grew up in and felt the same comfort of being part of a faith community that still had a house to be connected to.
The chic, eclectic and increasingly Black-owned eateries are new and added to my enjoyment and pride of the continued growth of one of the greatest cities in the world. I went back to my home and what is also Sage's home - the protagonist of my children's fiction series. As I continue to discover new ways of loving what I've always known, Sage will just be finding her legs there.
